The Nuts and Bolts of My State of Mind

This segment is a personal and professional 30-day challenge encouraged by HBCUvc to put one’s thoughts into writing based on preferred interests.

Lately, I have been spiraling out of control. My creative juices are overflowing. Part of it began when I arrived home, my brother and I switched rooms. His room was well decorated — for him. Nonetheless, it did not give me the vibe I needed to be as productive and as comfortable as I could be. So, what I did I do, you may ask. Well, of course, I just basked in sorrow and discomfort for a few weeks.

Then the day finally came. I took a trip to the nearest home improvement store and purchased the tools I needed to get started. An essential item in my toolbox was a cordless power drill. As I used the drill, so much about my life (and Physics) came into perspective. Here is a culmination of my thoughts and a Physics 101 crash course:

The old fixtures represented position. Position is a starting point used to describe the location of an object.

Some call it the past; others refer to it as a story. In essence, it comes with a starting point. I give credit to mine because it has contributed to where I am today. Even though I cannot change my past, I have allowed it to change me. The beauty of it all is how much it does not define my future. With a future so bright, most times, it’s hard to open my eyes wide enough to see the end of the tunnel.

The power drill represented motion. Motion is when an object changes its position over time. If I did not exert force to flip the switch on the drill, it would remain motionless.

I can apply the same notion to life. As significant as my thoughts are, they are meaningless without action. My actions influence the speed and direction to achieve the aspirations I set out for myself.

Physics aside, the drill bits represented my team. Drill bits come in different sizes, shapes, and materials designed to drill holes. Without the correct drill bits, I cannot do the job.

Every individual on my team plays a unique role that is helpful in distinct aspects of my life. As a unit, they highlight my strengths, strengthen my weaknesses, and challenge me to be better than yesterday.

Note to self: Everything and everyone around me has a purpose.
